  • IOTA prepares for the Rebased Mainnet launch with major upgrades in user experience, scalability, and developer tools in Q1 2025.

IOTA is making substantial strides toward the launch of its Rebased Mainnet in Q2 2025, with significant progress across multiple departments. Throughout Q1 2025, the IOTA Foundation focused on refining core infrastructure, expanding adoption efforts, and increasing ecosystem support.

With the much-anticipated transition to Move-based smart contracts and improvements in scalability, IOTA is positioning itself to meet real-world application needs. The Foundation’s work in research and development, product adoption, and ecosystem growth has laid the groundwork for a smooth mainnet launch.

Advancements in Research and Development

The IOTA Foundation’s Research and Development teams had a productive first quarter, working on key improvements ahead of the Rebased Mainnet release. The Node Team collaborated with Sui to integrate important upstream enhancements, improving node reliability and health monitoring.

One major achievement was the overhaul of the continuous integration pipeline, which will streamline delivery processes across the organization.

In terms of consensus protocols, the Starfish consensus, which builds on Mysticeti, demonstrated significant improvements in robustness and throughput. The team introduced a more equitable mechanism for validator selection, enhancing fairness and network security.

The Smart Contract Platform Team made important strides, addressing audit findings and improving migration tools. They also launched the Stardust Indexer to help with indexing migrated ledger objects, setting the stage for a smooth transition to the Rebased Mainnet.

The IOTA Improvement Proposal repository was also reintroduced, allowing for greater transparency and community-driven protocol updates.

Product Adoption and Real-world Integration

The Product Adoption department has been focused on simplifying blockchain integration for businesses and developers. A notable product launch was the IOTA Gas Station, a tool that allows developers and businesses to sponsor transaction fees, enhancing the user experience by eliminating gas fees. This open-source solution aims to reduce onboarding friction and improve interaction with decentralized applications (dApps) on the IOTA network.

In addition, the IOTA Identity platform has migrated to be compatible with IOTA Rebased, enabling decentralized identity solutions aligned with W3C DID standards. The alpha release now offers privacy-preserving infrastructure that allows users to control their personal data, further enhancing the potential of IOTA in the digital identity space.

The Business Innovation Program also marked a significant step toward adoption, with up to €100,000 available for projects building on the IOTA Mainnet. This initiative has already attracted numerous applications.

Ecosystem Growth and Strategic Partnerships

IOTA’s Ecosystem Department has been instrumental in building relationships with new and existing projects, positioning the network for broader adoption. The department worked on integrating infrastructure for the upcoming L1 Mainnet, adding new validators to the public testnet, and ensuring compatibility with key components like Pyth Oracles and RPC providers.

A new partnership with ANKR has also introduced an RPC provider to support IOTA EVM, while analytics tools from Nansen and Lukka were integrated to enhance the platform’s functionality.

The Business Development team has been fostering collaborations within the Move VM ecosystem, engaging with developers from networks like Sui and Aptos.

Meanwhile, the IOTA Grants Program saw an uptick in applications, with several grants already approved to support innovative projects. The newly launched IOTA Ambassador Program further strengthens community engagement, providing opportunities for users to get involved and contribute to the network’s growth.

Legal and Regulatory Affairs

As the IOTA Foundation advances its technical and business objectives, it continues to engage with regulators and stakeholders globally. In Q1 2025, the Foundation provided feedback to several key regulatory bodies, including the International Organization of Securities Commissions and Kenya’s Draft National Policy and Virtual Asset Service Providers Bill.

These engagements are aimed at ensuring that IOTA’s solutions comply with international standards while supporting innovation.

Additionally, the IOTA Foundation has joined the Global Blockchain Business Council to strengthen its presence in the United States and further enhance its regulatory efforts worldwide.

IOTA’s  “Rebased” mainnet features a comprehensive suite of upgrades aimed at improving user experience, developer tools, and network functionality. As previously mentioned in our report, the upgrade includes a new wallet, a streamlined dashboard, improved ledger integration, enhanced security, and better developer resources.

IOTA’s token holders (98%) voted in favor of the upgrade in December 2024, marking a significant milestone. This transition positions IOTA for a future-focused, user-friendly network ready for real-world applications.
